CALM has been there for the midwifery community in times of crisis and in times of opportunity.

We hold the line and push back against the medical lobby’s efforts to suppress and marginalize the midwifery profession in California and deny our citizens access to midwifery care.

We work tirelessly to advocate for legislation to expand access to midwifery care in ways that are both big and small.

We are asking, in return, for you to support our work and our initiatives as we head into 2023. Donate Today https://calmidwives.org/donate

Following are a few of the reasons why CALM deserves your donation.

When CMA and ACOG introduce hostile bills, CALM launches its rapid-response team to reach out to supporters, quickly mobilizing strong and well-coordinated opposition.

Since our 2013 battle to mitigate the worst impacts of AB 1308, CALM and our allies have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to fight anti-home birth legislation that would deny people access to midwifery care.

At the same time, we have fought to lay the groundwork for legislative and regulatory initiatives that will improve the lives of midwives and the people we serve.

As we continue to proactively put forth legislation that protects and improves access to midwifery care, CALM is counting on our community to offer the same level of support and engagement you did when we:

  • Passed SB 407 to expand LM care under Medi-Cal
  • Passed SB 408 to define and protect the status of midwife assistants
  • Created provisions for further integration of LMs in SB 798, including legally protected peer review and professional corporations
  • Mobilized against SB 457, which would have placed comprehensive restrictions on all out-of-hospital births
  • Mobilized against the Medical Board’s 2019 proposed regulations to institute a total ban on VBAC care with licensed midwives

If every midwife donated $10 for each client receiving care each year we could raise enough money to take our legislative agenda to the next level.

It would also allow us to offset the costs of quality improvement initiatives, continuing education workshops, scholarships, administrative costs of the organization, webinars and updates on relevant issues for midwives, as well as fund part-time staff with expertise in legal and legislative advocacy.

CALM board members and officers are volunteers, contributing 5-10 hours each week (sometimes more) for the benefit of the profession. If you don't have time to volunteer or serve as a board member, please donate what you can to help out.

Together we can bring midwifery to more families AND protect midwives from hostile legislation and onerous regulation

Since the passage of AB 1308 Bonilla in 2013, CALM and its allies have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to lay the groundwork for professional, legislative and regulatory initiatives to improve the lives of midwives and the families they serve.

What 2020 taught us is that the midwifery community cannot afford to be complacent about the status quo.

In 2020 we also learned that, in the past 10 years, 100% of complaints filed with the Medical Board against LMs—whether warranted or not—are converted into full-blown investigations, while only 18% of complaints filed against physicians were investigated during the same time period.

In other words, LM complaints to the Medical Board are turning into investigations at a rate 5-6 times higher than for physicians. Equally troubling, next year the Medical Board has plans to implement a 50% increase in LM licensing fees, with no input from or advance notice to the Midwifery Advisory Council or CALM leadership.

The facts can no longer be denied: the time for a Licensed Midwife Board is long overdue.

As a profession we cannot grow, thrive, or even survive long term until we have true self-determination by setting our own independent standards and defining our own best practices.

CALM needs your financial help to make this happen.

We have made enormous strides in 2020 gaining an audience with key policy-makers and their executive staff. Consensus is growing for a Licensed Midwife Board. To keep this momentum going we will need to mobilize our supporters and make our voices heard with phone calls, legislative visits, and a regular presence in Sacramento.

All of which, costs money.

If every midwife donated $10 for each client receiving care each year we could raise enough money to take our legislative agenda to the next level and offset the costs of quality improvement initiatives, continuing education workshops, scholarships, administrative costs of the organization, webinars and updates on relevant issues for midwives, and fund part-time staff with expertise in legal and legislative advocacy.

CALM has been there for the midwifery community in times of crisis and times of opportunity. When CMA and ACOG introduced hostile bills, CALM launched its rapid-response team to reach out to supporters -- quickly mobilizing  strong and well-coordinated opposition 00 like with did with SB 457 Bates in 2017 (which would have placed comprehensive restrictions on all out-of-hospital births). More rencently, with your support we successfully thwarted a proposal by the Medical Board to ban VBAC care with LMs in 2019.

As we continue to proactively put forth legislation that protects and improves access, CALM is counting on your ongoing support -- as you did when we passed SB 407 (which expanded LM care under Medi-Cal) and SB 408 (which defined and protected the status of midwife assistants), provisions for further integration of LMs in SB 798 Hill (which included professional corporations and protected peer review provisions for licensed midwives) and as we have painstakingly laid the groundwork for legislation to put guidelines back into regulations for an independent Licensed Midwife Board.
