Thanks to Senator Nancy Skinner, the role that midwives play in providing critical maternal and newborn health was honored with a resolution by the California legislature. The resolution, which recognizes the International Day of the Midwife, honors that midwives “save lives, prevent maternal and newborn deaths, avert complications and preventable deaths and illnesses, and advance human rights.”
State Senator Senator Skinner (D-9) represents California’s 9th Senate District, which includes the cities of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, El Cerrito, Emeryville, El Sobrante, Hercules, Kensington, Oakland, Piedmont, Pinole, Richmond, Rodeo, San Leandro and San Pablo. She serves as the chair of the Public Safety Committee and the chair of the Budget subcommittee that oversees the Public Safety budget, among other committee roles.
The California Association for Licensed Midwives (CALM) has launched a social media campaign to honor legislators who champion the health of birthing families. CALM is the professional association for California licensed midwives.

- Increases access to midwifery care by ensuring that licensed midwives are visible, integrated into California’s health care system, accessible and valued providers of maternity care throughout California.
